Before we delve into the details of Life Plan Resorts ecological and sustainable core values, we would like to share with you a very old, sustainable tradition that we are currently witnessing. This ancient form of agricultural cultivation takes place only once a year and can only be experienced in the western Mediterranean. Here, in Benavente, Portugal, we find ourselves surrounded by the lush embrace of a protected cork tree forest. And now, it’s harvesting time.
The cork harvesting process is a fascinating and environmentally sustainable practice that has been passed down through generations. It involves careful and skilled manual labour to ensure the trees’ health and the quality of the cork. The process typically takes place during the summer when the cork bark can be easily peeled off the tree. It is important to note that cork harvesting does not harm the trees; in fact, it encourages their growth and longevity.

At Life Plan Resorts, we are deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute positively to the environment and society through the protection of our cork forest and our support of sustainable cork harvesting practices. By doing so, we create a harmonious balance between our resort’s operations and the natural world, ensuring that future generations can continue to appreciate and enjoy the beauty and benefits of this precious ecosystem. However, our commitment to creating a sustainable and eco-friendly resort extends far beyond that.
Life Plan Resorts pillars of sustainability
One of the primary pillars of Life Plan Resorts sustainability efforts lies in its water conservation practices. Recognizing the importance of responsible water management, the resort has installed water-saving devices in showers, faucets, and toilets, significantly reducing water wastage without compromising on guest comfort. Additionally, efficient irrigation systems have been implemented to optimize water usage in maintaining the lush landscapes while reducing unnecessary water consumption. Moreover, LPR has taken an innovative approach to water sustainability by incorporating rainwater harvesting systems. By capturing and storing rainwater, the resort can utilize this natural resource for non-potable purposes, further reducing the strain on local water supplies and mitigating the impact on the surrounding environment.
To further reduce its ecological footprint, Portugal’s leading senior living community is investing in renewable energy sources. Solar panels will be installed to supplement a significant portion of the resort’s energy demands, harnessing the power of the sun to generate clean electricity. Coupled with energy-efficient appliances and the use of motion sensors for lighting, the resort strives to minimize its energy consumption and promote a sustainable approach to power usage. Another noteworthy aspect of LPR’s sustainability focus is its commitment to electric vehicles (EVs). The resort has established electric vehicle charging points, encouraging guests and staff to use EVs as a greener mode of transportation and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Waste management is yet another area where Life Plan Resorts sets an excellent example. The private residential resort has implemented a comprehensive waste management program that emphasizes proper waste separation. Recyclable and organic waste are systematically separated and managed, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. In addition to this, the use of composting fertilizers aids in converting organic waste into valuable resources for landscaping and agricultural purposes.
Being a purpose-built retirement community for independent and assisted living, providing fellowship and support not only for the residents but also for the local community is of utmost importance. Life Plan Resorts is dedicated to supporting the local community and promoting sustainable practices in the region. The resort prioritizes local suppliers who adhere to sustainable principles and offer organic and fair-trade products. By sourcing locally, LPR minimizes its carbon footprint from transportation while supporting the local economy and promoting social responsibility.
The commitment to sustainability also extends to the resort’s infrastructure and furnishings. Eco-friendly construction materials are chosen for building and renovation projects, promoting resource efficiency, and minimizing environmental impact. Furniture is carefully selected to be durable, made from renewable or recycled resources, and free from harmful chemicals. Furthermore, LPR takes a strong stance against the use of disposable products, opting for reusable and sustainable alternatives to reduce single-use waste.
However, while these measures are extensive, they are not the only ones. Pacha Mama, Mother Earth, is dear to our hearts, and we have many other environmentally friendly approaches in the works. By embracing sustainability as a core value, Life Plan Resorts sets a commendable standard for the hospitality industry, and we genuinely hope to inspire others to follow suit in safeguarding our planet for future generations.
